| Bayer Formalizes China PC Production Plans |

Bayer has finalized plans for its proposed polycarbonate (PC) plant in China. The German giant has signed a formal contract with Shanghai Chlor Alkali Chemical Co. to establish a joint venture called Bayer Polymers Shanghai Co Ltd. and build a world-scale PC facility in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park in Caojing, China. Bayer will hold a 90% share in the joint venture, which will initially construct a 50,000-tonnes/yr plant. Completion is scheduled for 2003. In the second phase, capacity will be doubled to 100,000 tonnes/yr. Plans also call for the establishment of a facility to produce the PC raw material bisphenol A and a 20,000-tonnes/yr compounding plant. Total investment in the project is $450 million. |
