US company Nanophase Technologies has developed and commenced marketing of transparent, functional coatings based on its nanoparticle technology. The company uses its patented Physical Vapor Synthesis (PVS) process to produce nanocrystalline particles, which are then incorporated into commercial film polymers to form clear coats.

In the company's new radiation-resistant clear coats, NanoTek zinc oxide and titanium dioxide absorb UV radiation and protect articles from UV exposure (e.g., sunscreen for cars, furniture, fabrics).

NanoTek antimony tin oxide and indium tin oxide, meanwhile, absorb IR radiation and enable thermal control in environments exposed to direct sunlight (e.g., car windows, architectural glass).

Nanophase's improved formulation technology provides coatings with lower haze (below 2%) and improved transparency (above 95%). The coatings also provide conductive and static dissipating properties. Applications potentially include video displays, touch screen applications and packaging for static sensitive electrical components, such as computer memory.

Nanophase has also released a clear coat that incorporates aluminum oxide to enhance coating hardness, scratch resistance and abrasion resistance. The coatings can be employed to improve the abrasion resistance of transparent plastics, highly polished metals, wood, and fabrics.
