| Bayer to invest EUR 1.7 billion in its Polymers Business Segment: |

Germany's Bayer AG is to invest EUR 1.7 billion in its Polymers Business Segment this year. The EUR 1.4 billion to be spent for new plant in this sector accounts for almost half of the Bayer's Group's total capital expenditure budget of EUR 3.1 billion. A further EUR 300 million is to be invested in the research and development of new materials. This underscores our commitment to polymers, one of the four core are as of our company, Bayer Management Board member Werner Spinner told some 150 journalists from 25 countries who attended a press conference held in Dusseldorf in advance of the K 2001 plastics trade fair. Bayer is looking to achieve a return on sales of 15 percent from 2004 in its polymers business. To this end, new investments are planned in polycarbonate in Thailand and in China. Bayer is also studying the feasilibity of producing the polyurethane raw materials TDI and MDI in China. The company is also considering a joint venture for styrene monomer (SM)/propylene oxide (PO), also in China. |
