Bayer and DuPont Engineering Polymers plan to build a joint venture PBT plant in Europe, with startup scheduled for the first half of 2003. The plant in Germany will have production capacity of 80,000 t/y, and be one of the largest in the world. Each partner will continue to process the base polymer into PBT compounds and market these products independently. The increase in PBT base polymer capacity is in response to the anticipated growth of the market for PBT resins, estimated at 7 to 9% per annum - one of the highest growth rates for engineering polymers. European demand for PBT in 2000 was estimated at 120,800 tonnes, while the U.S. market was estimated at 153,000 tonnes, and demand in Asia, including Japan, 198,500 tonnes. Japanese demand in 2000 was estimated at 96,000 tonnes. |
