According to a soon-to-be-released updated study from Business Communications Co. (BCC), Inc. (www.bccresearch.com) entitled Petrochemical Catalysts - Update, the U.S. market for catalysts, estimated at $2.2 billion in 2000, will grow to an estimated $2.7 billion in 2005. This is equivalent to average annual growth of 3.9%.

There many different types of catalysts, ranging from high-volume commodities like hydrogen fluoride and sulfuric acid to very expensive noble metals. Thus, market values measured in pounds are virtually meaningless, and all market figures in the report are in dollar values.

The market for chemical catalysts is estimated at about $1,075 million in 2000, and is expected to grow at 4.1%/yr to reach $1,312 million by 2005. BCC segments the chemical business and catalyst markets into six major categories: hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, organic syntheses, oxidation, polymerization, and synthesis gas/syngas processes.

Petroleum refining catalysts are a slightly bigger current market with an estimated $1,125 million sales in 2000, predicted to grow at a 3.7%/y to about $1,347 million in 2005.
