Solvay Consolidates Number Two Position in Sodium Bicarbonate

Belgian firm Solvay has decided to build a new sodium bicarbonate production line on the site of its Soda Ash plant at Torrelavega, Spain. The 80,000-t/y plant, scheduled to come on line in October 2002, will boost annual production to 450 kt/year. Solvay is the second largest worldwide producer and is, by far, the largest in Europe. Sodium bicarbonate is used in flue gas treatment, in pharmaceutical and paramedical applications, such as the hemodialysis, as well as in many industrial processes. Sodium bicarbonate is also used in the food industry, in detergents, and fire extinguishing.
