LG Chemical To Manufacture Polyester Elastomers. Plans PBT JV with Japanese Firm

South Korea's LG Chemical will utilize its existing 8,000-tonnes/yr PBT production plant in Yosu to venture into the production of thermoplastic polyester elastomers. The company says the plant's production scale is no longer large enough to be competitive in the PBT market. Instead of producing PBT itself, LG Chemical says its is in negotiations with a Japanese supplier of PBT to form a joint venture that would supply the resin to the company's existing compounding facilities. Besides thermoplastics polyester elastomers, LG Chemical has identified five other specialty plastics areas in which it plans to concentrate resources. These include prices flame retardant ABS, transparent ABS, ABS extrusion grades for refrigerators, flame retardant HIPS, and PBT tubing grades for optical fiber applications. Through emphasis on high valued-added products, LG Chemicals intends to boost the proportion of specialty resin sales at its Performance Polymers Business Unit from the current 60% to 67% by 2005.
