Corning Inc. officially opened its active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD) glass substrates production facility in Tainan Science-Based Industrial Park on May 10. The plant is the first of its type in Taiwan. Corning is a world-leading supplier of AMLCD glass substrates for notebook computers, desktop monitors and consumer electronics products. Corning also has a plant in Shizuoka, Japan. By 2004, the global AMLCD glass industry is projected to grow to US$2 billion (2.44 trillion). The global market for AMLCD panels will grow by an estimated 35% this year. Approximately 15% of the current global supply of AMLCD panels comes from Taiwan, and industry analysts project that number to grow to 25% by 2004. Through its Display Technologies business, Corning manufactures two glass substrate compositions, 1737 which is currently the worldwide AMLCD industry standard, and the new EAGLE2000 glass. Corning EAGLE2000 substrates enable AMLCD manufacturers to produce larger, thinner and higher resolution displays more affordably, while trimming panel weight by up to 35%. Both glass substrates are available from the Tainan facility. |
